COMMUNICATIONS & COMPUTERS BRANCH
The Sikkim Police Communication Branch (erstwhile Wireless Branch & Police Radio) came into existence during the early 1970s with an ex-serviceman of the Signal Regiment heading the branch as Police Inspector with a few G.D. staff of Sikkim Police under his supervision.
The Communications & Computer which branch started with a modest beginning has now evolved into a multifaceted branch encompassing different types of high end technologies which include:
- High Frequency Communication
- Very High Frequency Communication
- Voice and Data communication through data modems
- Internet, Email and Bulk SMS etc.
- POLNET
- GIS maps of Sikkim
- Digital Mobile Radios ( DMR) and Digital repeaters
- GPS tracking of DMR sets through satellites etc.
- Automatic location logging
The branch is headed by the Inspector General of Police with Additional Director – IT & Superintendent of Police assisting him in the daily functioning of the branch consisting of Police, IT personnel and accounts & administrative staff.
STATUS OF CURRENT DEPLOYMENT OF COMMUNICATION CADRE PERSONNEL
There are 28 P.S. in Sikkim each with a dedicated Wireless Communication Centre manned by the communication cadre 24/7 . Regarding the deployment in various Police Outposts, of the 55 sanctioned O.P.s, the communication cadre personnel are deployed only in 13 O.Ps with the rest being managed by G.D. personnel. Nine Fire stations including Fire and Emergency HQ have been provided with statics sets by the communication branch and these too are being currently handled by the fire personnel.
